I am writing this review as someone with crippling anxiety oftentimes, even the smallest decisions will send me into a tailspin of worry and stress Overthinking is a serious problem for me, so when I heard that Anne s new book was titled Don t Overthink It , I became very hopeful that perhaps this was going to help me Within the first chapter, I knew that I was right Anne directs her readers through every aspect of overthinking, and she does so with her own experiences in overcoming overthinking, but she also brings in expansive research on the topic to assist with her points She is so encouraging with her tone You are not doomed to a life of overthinking You can do better, but it won t happen instantly After every chapter is a workbook page to apply principles to your own life and reflect on how you are actively making decisions This book held my hand through applying each principle Anne spoke on to my own life and own overthinking As Anne says, Perfection isn t possible, but change totally is I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is an overthinker it will revamp your mental energy I didn t really think I was much of an overthinker, but I love the way Anne Bogel writes, so I eagerly pre ordered this book, which comes out March 3 One of the preorder bonuses was a NetGalley ebook and the opportunity to read this book before publication.Reading this book, I have realized that I am, in fact, an overthinker, and so is almost everyone else in my family We just used different terms to describe our behavior One of my favorite terms in this book is analysis paralysis Our family has always described ourselves as poor decision makers, but this term is much descriptive As an academic, I just saw myself as doing research when I gathered information prior to making a decision, if I had a problem deciding, I would chalk it up to option glut I didn t see myself as an overthinker, because I would often put off decisions rather than decide immediately. How wrong I was Not only is this book compulsively readable, but it is full of wonderful descriptive anecdotes that beautifully illustrate the points Anne makes More importantly, it is full of practical advice and actual solutions to the dilemmas that result from overthinking.I highly recommend this book to all overthinkers and poor decision makers Bringing joy to your life is always a good thing As a fan and follower of Anne Bogel s blog and podcasts, I joined the launch team of this book not because I thought I was an overthinker but just because I enjoy Bogel s writing I loved I d Rather Be Reading and gave it to many people as a gift I tend to be a satisficer with most decisions, but a few minutes into this book and I realized that this was the book I didn t know I needed Don t Overthink It is not just a book about over thinking but a book about productivity, navigating life and making wise decisions My favorite chapter is the one about using our values to help us make decisions without overthinking There are often times I ve second guessed myself about a decision that should have been a clear yes it aligns with my values but secondary concerns stalled me I needed the reminder that our thought lives are truly our lives, and retraining our thoughts can reshape our actual lives I saw myself in many of the examples Bogel gives, especially when she writes about deciding to splurge and rethinking all the costs, over and over again I might adopt her phrase completing the cycle for myself Open cycles, she writes, consume mental energy, occupy brain space, and beg us to monitor them as jobs in progress Our brains get anxious when too many cycles remain open, because it takes energy to maintain them I go through this a lot with small cycles putting things away and bigger ones executing on a task or project before starting a new one This is a book I ll return to and likely give as a gift It makes a great graduation gift for young people heading into adulthood But most of all, even those who don t overthink will learn something from this book. This is one of those books that I feel was written just for me And not only that, it feels like I m having a conversation with a good girlfriend when I m reading it Anne s writing style is calm, clear and personal, all while providing information and anecdotes that are applicable to so many situations We learn what overthinking really is and how it manifests in our lives, and get practical steps for how to handle it I found myself in many of the pages of this book, thinking Oh yes, I do that The tools Anne provides are already making a difference in my life, and I can t wait to share this book with friends And now I can finally stop worrying that I should apologize to my prom date for leaving him to hang out with friends 30 years ago Dont Overthink It
